I turn my screen off. The thought of confronting him about cheating on me, breaking up with him, nauseates me. Who will I be without Jordan?

“Your stalker?” Miles asks.

I shake my head. “Jordan.”

He tilts his head. “Trouble in paradise?”

Tears sting my eyes. “Um, yeah.” I try to clear my throat, blink the tears away, but the sob just keeps welling up in my chest. Shit. “He’s cheating on me.”

The words land in the silence between us like an anchor. I can’t believe I just said that out loud. The reality hasn’t even fully sunk in yet. Jordan kissed Ash. Jordan. Kissed. Ash. And probably did a lot more with her after they left her kitchen.

Maybe she lied to me at Mariano’s. She was so convincing, but . . . she could still be my stalker. She obviously wants me out of the way so she can date Jordan.

She got rid of one of his girlfriends. Time to get rid of another.

Miles stands. I expect him to roll his eyes. Tell me I should’ve seen this coming. That of course Jordan doesn’t want me because I’m one of those girls. Nothing special. Replaceable.

But he doesn’t say any of that. He closes the space between us, stopping when our toes are nearly touching. “So dump him. You deserve better.” He says it like it’s that simple.

“I don’t,” I breathe.

Miles’s brows fold down low over his eyes. “Why not?”

“Jordan is the best thing that ever happened to me. Without him, I’m nothing.” The first tear slips down my cheek, followed quickly by another. When my lip starts to tremble, I clamp my hand over my mouth before the cry can escape.

Jordan is my everything. My whole life. I gave up my college plans to follow him to California. I gave up my dream to move to New York and work in book publishing for him. For a future in Beaumont together. With the ring on my finger, he promised me that future.

Now everything I’ve planned, everything I’ve ever dreamed of, has been ripped away from me.

He’s the one who nicknamed me Maddie. Now who will I be?

Miles hooks a gentle finger under my chin and tilts my face up to his. So I can’t hide my tears from him. “The only way you’re nothing is if you stay with him.”

“He made me who I am,” I whisper.

Miles shakes his head. “No, he didn’t. He changed you.” He sweeps a lock of hair over my shoulder, trailing his fingertips along my skin. “But you didn’t need to change. You were already perfect. You get that, don’t you?”

My heart squeezes. I’m almost starting to think Miles cares about me more than Jordan does.

When I can’t answer, he gives me a sad smile. “You don’t.” He wipes a tear off my cheek with his thumb. “Someday you will.”
